Barnegat Light was one of the first settlements on Long Beach Island. Originally mapped by Danish explorers during the 1600's, the name Barnegat is in fact derived from a Danish word meaning, "inlet of the breakers". It was this, "inlet of the breakers" that prompted the construction of a lighthouse to help protect shipping traveling up and down the eastern seaboard. This original lighthouse fell into the sea during the 19th century and a new, more effective lighthouse was designed and built by George Meade (the same George Meade who commanded Union forces at the Battle of Gettysburg).
Barnegat Light on Long Beach Island NJ is the northern most town on LBI and home to the famous Barnegat Lighthouse. Barnegat Light is among the oldest areas of settlement on Long Beach Island NJ having been first discovered by the Dutch during the 1600’s. In fact, the name “Barnegat” is derived from a Danish word meaning “inlet of the breakers” in reference to the turbulent waters of what is now Barnegat Inlet as observed by these early Dutch explorers. It was partly these rough waters that prompted the construction of the first Barnegat Lighthouse in the early 1800’s to help guide ships through this dangerous area. This first lighthouse was woefully incapable of performing its job and after it fell into the sea, a new lighthouse was constructed by George Meade (the same George Meade who led the Union forces to victory in the Battle of Gettysburg) that still stands to this day. Today, Barnegat Light is a quiet shore town with many historic buildings and lush natural vegetation. Barnegat Light NJ is also home to a massive fleet of fishing vessels that supply fresh seafood up and down the East coast.
